Exmoor is one of the special areas of Britain that is protected for the enjoyment of everyone. Located in the heart of the West Country in the counties of Somerset and Devon, Exmoor invites you to relax and enjoy the stunning beauty of its diverse landscape and coastline. With its open moorland, dramatic coastline and woodland combes, Exmoor is rich in hidden places where you can still get away from it all if you wish or if you are after some activity there's plenty going on. If you are into cycling, horse riding, mountain biking, windsurfing, sailing, fishing shooting, swimming, golf, tennis, bowling or walking there are some of the best sporting facilities around. The towns along the region's coastline offer the best of both worlds - a breath of sea air and wonderful scenery.

There are many species of rare lichen to be found in the area, which provides evidence of the pollution-free atmosphere. One thousand different flowering plants and grasses flourish on Exmoor. The lack of light pollution gives for dark skies at night with wonderful views of the stars and satellites passing overhead. Often there are no man-made sounds, just those of nature or complete silence.

Exmoor is one of the 14 areas of the United Kingdom given the highest landscape protection and designated as a National Park. The Greater Exmoor area, covering 529 sq miles (1371 sq kms) encapsulates the Exmoor National Park, being 267 sq miles (692 sq kms) with over 745 miles (1200 sq kms) of waymarked Rights of Way plus bridlepaths to explore. A big choice of guides, maps and other information is available from the National Park and other Visitor Centres and Tourist Information Centres.

The Exmoor Pony is a unique and rare breed, having a total population (800 breeding Exmoors in the World!) less than many other endangered species.

The wild Red Deer can be seen grazing on the Moor and the traditional sheep breed of Exmoor Horn and Devon Closewool roam at roadsides. Devon cattle are bred with the Exmoor Quality Beef Producers providing grass fed animals giving texture and flavour and the Moor has many award winning butchers.

Exmoor's culture is unique and, of course, no meal would be complete without Somerset or Devon clotted cream. Most tea shops have cream teas (scones, cream and jam) and establishments providing food are a celebration of Exmoor traditions of its feasts and its farming and age-old recipes have passed down through the generations. The recently published book "Exmoor Food and Cookery" can be obtained from most Book Shops in the area.
